SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED PROJECTS
REHABILITATE BUILDING 9 FOR MENTAL HEALTH CENTER – ASHEVILLE, NC VA MEDICAL CENTER
This project rehabilitated the existing Building 9 at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville, NC for mental health offices, exam rooms, group rooms, and support rooms. The existing building is 42,619 gsf including basement, three floors, and attic space. The entire building underwent glovebag asbestos abatement, floor tile and mastic abatement, as well as lead-based paint removal and disposal. The project replaced the windows, upgraded and painted the exterior stucco and all trim. Interior work included demolition of walls and doors, installation of new sheetrock/metal stud wall, wood doors/metal frames/hardware, new flooring, and new ceilings. Electrical work included a new transformer, LED lighting, passenger elevator, and data. New mechanical work included a new boiler and chiller, air handling systems, ductwork, and controls. Site work included grading, new utility lines, surface parking, and landscaping. As this is a historic building, work was in accordance with the state historic preservation office requirements and relevant national historic preservation briefs for each definable feature of work. Of particular significance here was preserving the exterior look of the building and surrounding grounds in keeping with the surrounding historic district.

RENOVATE & EXPAND CLC & HOSPICE (BLDG 23) – DURHAM, NC VA MEDICAL CENTER
The project consisted of 11,995 square feet of select renovation at floors 1 and 2 of the existing Community Living Center. Additionally, the project included the construction of a new 14,540 SF hospice wing and new courtyard between the existing Community Living Center and the new expansion. The cost magnitude was $5-10M. The project was located at the active Durham VA Medical Center for the Department of Veterans Affairs. Close coordination was required with the VA Staff, Hospital Staff, and Contracting representatives to assure little to no disruption in hospital functionality. This particular VA campus faced challenges with very limited parking and site space. MSK closely coordinated our site activity with the VA and subcontractors to maintain access to the site and surrounding buildings without disturbing the day to day operations of the VAMC. Major trades included grading, asbestos abatement, structure demolition, concrete, structural steel framing, steel decking, metal fabrications, all finishes, specialties, furnishings, fire protection, MEP, communications, mass notification system, paving, as well as new and existing utility work.
Renovate & Expand CLC & Hospice BLDG 23 at the Durham VAMC

NEW PARKING STRUCTURE MT. HOME VAMC, TN
The Construct Above Ground parking garage project involved the demolition of an existing parking lots followed by the construction of a multi-story parking garage for the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center in Mountain Home, Tennessee. The scope included but was not limited to general construction, alterations, caissons, paving, grading, steel, masonry, mechanical, architectural, civil/site, utility, electrical, removal of structures, and the erection of pre-cast concrete. To give an idea of the size of the structure, the first level alone with the overhang was 41,644SF. Overall the project encompassed 93,744SF. MSK Construction offered complimentary value engineering services through this RFP negotiated bid. Pairing with a precast industry leader, Tindall Corp, MSK was able to offer the Department of the VA several cost saving solutions. Many unforeseen conditions involving unfavorable soil conditions and sink holes were discovered during this project, which led to significant change orders for additional caisson work. MSK kept up diligent and transparent negotiations throughout these change orders with the VA.
CORRECT DEFICIENCIES & RENOVATE BUILDING 7 – SALISBURY, NC VAMC
This project scope included but was not limited to general construction, alterations, walks, grading, drainage, mechanical and electrical work, utility systems, necessary removal of existing structures and construction and certain other items. MSK provided all materials and completed all work with little to no effect or down time to B7 and surrounding buildings, other than what had been indicated on the drawings for phasing.
MSK ran two crews, a day time crew for exterior work and a night time crew for the interior work. By having these two crews it allowed us to truly utilize every contract day to its fullest. HVAC Scope: HVAC scope for project 659-14-202 consisted of the installation of new HVAC equipment to include 3 air handling units, 49 VAVs with associated seismic and hydronic plumbing, radiant ceiling panels, heat exchangers, expansion tanks, inline booster pumps, and all DDC Controls. In order to properly install this equipment MSK tapped into the campuses steam, CW, and HW mains and routed appropriately to the new units sitting on the roof of both the Core Clinic and Building 7. Phasing of HVAC: Per the contract documents there was to be no demolition of the existing system and all associated equipment until the new HVAC system has been properly installed, tested, and certified. At that time the existing equipment was removed from the roof and within the interior ceilings. Electrical Scope: Per the contract documents MSK was required to remove and then reinstall 2 electrical panels rated at 400amp and 600amp. This also required all new feeders and associated circuitry. In addition to the panels, MSK installed new lighting protection on the roof as well as new data and communication lines.
CITY BISTRO EXTERIOR RENOVATIONS – COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON, SC
MSK began renovating the interior of the City Bistro Dining Hall at the College of Charleston in July 2018. MSK completed on-time before the opening of the bistro in January 2019. We are honored to have been entrusted with the interior renovation of the City Bistro, especially after enjoying the successful completion of the City Bistro Exterior Renovation in 2017. Our work in the City Bistro Residential Dining Hall consisted of the renovation of an existing residential dining facility on the ground floor of the Joe E. Berry Jr. Residence Hall. The project encompassed approximately 7,380 SF, including dining platforms, kitchen, and food preparation areas.
LONG TERM CARE PHASE III – SALISBURY, NC VA MEDICAL CENTER
We were very excited to be awarded the Long Term Health Care Facility Reconstruction, an $8 Million project in Salisbury, North Carolina. We appreciated the vote of confidence from the Department of Veterans Affairs for the MSK team.

I want to commend the staff on this project. Paul “Sonny” Marshall as Senior Project Manager, Shane Lamb will as Project Manager, Jeff Shirhall as Superintendent, Alex Henry Project Engineer and Keleigh Marshall as Project Administrator. As company president and owner, I was proud to oversee team guidance as well serve as Safety director!
I believe that through the completion of this project we have proved MSK’s motto, as the Seabees would say, “Can Do”, to truly be the cornerstone of our mission statement and code of conduct. RENOVATE B WING 5TH FLOOR MENTAL HEALTH – FAYETTEVILLE, NC VA MEDICAL CENTER
MSK is honored to have been awarded this project at the VA Medical Center in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The Fayetteville VA Medical Center provides for the health care needs of Veterans in 19 counties in southeastern North and two counties in northeastern South Carolina. Our staff was pleased to develop a great working relationship with the staff at this location. As always, MSK would like to show our appreciate for the efforts put in by our subcontractors and staff. These efforts have resulted in a $747,000 contract.
The project included the demolition of existing walls, flooring and ceiling tiles on the 5th floor of Building 1 within the VA Medical Center in Fayetteville, NC. The remainder of the hospital and the adjoining wing of the 5th floor was active throughout the entire length of the project which involved extensive infection control and safety coordination between MSK and the VA Staff. The project scope included asbestos abatement, lead-based paint removal, spray foam insulation, doors and frames, door hardware, bathroom renovations, fire protection, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, communications, as well as fire alarm and safety. MSK coordinated a crane to bring materials in through the 5th floor window, this was due to the fact that all hospital elevators were of critical need for the active hospital staff.

SIMONS CENTER SAFETY REPAIRS – COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON
MSK is happy to announce that the repairs to the College of Charleston’s Albert Simons Center for the Arts have been completed. After crossing our T’s and dotting those I’s, we’ve completed the entire construction process working closely with the College and Liollio Architecture. The project entailed of safety repairs to the Robinson Theatre in the Simons Center for the Arts at the College of Charleston including, but not limited to, demolition, new safety ladders, guardrails, extension of existing gallery platforms, theatre rigging upgrades, electrical, lighting, controls, and accessories. This work will ensure that the Robinson Theatre serves as a safe space for students, faculty and the public to enjoy the arts for years to come. EMERGENCY REPAIR OF EXPANSION GAP – CHARLESTON, SC VAMC
MSK performed this project to seal the expansion gap between the Clinical Addition (AA/BB) and Original Structure of the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston, SC. MSK successfully sealed the isolation joint between the original medical center and the clinical addition 1st floor slabs on three sides continuous to prevent moist air from traveling upward in the 10” vertical shaft.
SERVICE BUILDING RENOVATIONS AT THE SALISBURY NATIONAL CEMETERY, NC
MSK was awarded this project in July 2018. This project was completed under the supervision of the DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS, National Cemetery Administration, Centralized Contracting Division (41C). The scope of this project included window & garage door replacement, exterior painting, stucco maintenance and repair, as well as exterior security lighting improvements on the exterior of the service building.

AVERY RESEARCH CENTER MECHANICAL & EXTERIOR RENOVATIONS – COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON, SC $1.6M
As of February 2018, MSK has begun the process to complete the Avery Institute Mechanical & Exterior Renovations project for our repeat client the College of Charleston. This project is located at the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture found in the heart of Downtown Charleston. The Avery project consists of Building envelope renovations, mechanical system upgrades and related architectural work. Cleaning, preparation of existing elastomeric coating over stucco, masonry, concrete and CMU block surfaces, repointing of brick and CMU masonry and repairs to stucco and concrete surfaces, removal and replacement of all exterior sealants, removal of all windows and replacement including modifications to openings and elastomeric coating system to exterior walls for entire exterior surfaces. Work will also include total removal of existing roof system down to the structural deck and replacement with a new thermoplastic roof system including flashings (membrane and sheet metal), edge metals, tie-in to fascia/soffit conditions, gutters, downspouts, insulation system with taper and cricket layouts, closures, underlayment systems and roof assembly components for various roof areas. The total area of the project encompassed 24,412SF.
